The thought of pooping after giving birth can be scary – especially with stitches. So, it’s completely normal to have some anxiety when it comes to your first poop after birth.
First of all, after you have a baby there’s a big shift of your organs and your digestive system is a little sluggish. Your hormones are wacky, and your uterus is shrinking back to its normal size. All of these things can throw your bowel movements off.

It’s important to realize, it can take two to three days for you to go, some moms are able to go sooner. If you feel the urge try not to put it off, the sooner you go – the better you will feel. f you’ve had stitches or a tear, pooping won’t make the tear any bigger, or make your stitches come away.
Take advantage of stool softeners while you’re in the hospital and make sure to drink plenty of water. Getting out of bed and moving around helps too – take a walk around the hospital unit with your baby.

Concerns about pooping postpartum are normal and most moms have them. If it’s been more than four days since you left the hospital and you still haven’t gone, you may want to give your doctor a call to see what they recommend. Most likely, you’ll be able to poop using the strategies mentioned, home remedies and old fashioned patience.
